Lester Young is one of the tenor saxophone players with a very smooth sound. Watch this music video produced by the Warner Bros from the early days of jazz music. Here Lester Young plays his horn together with other important jazz musicians, all of them black guys with the exception of the guitat player Barney Kessell who is not shown clearly, maybe because it at this was unadmittable to have a white guy playing jazz? Or playing it in a mixed group? This is most probable considering that in states like Alabama and other southern states segregation and racist thinking was legally supported until passed the first half of the 20th century. And of course racist thinking is still practiced by large groups of the US-population, despite of their new presisent Barak Obama, who is rather an icon and we do not expect that he will change anything substantial to the racist behaviour of the US-population, but that’s off topic. This jam session gets pretty hot at the end, Lester’s cooking. Watch the video and enjoy Lester Young’s tenor saxophone playing and maybe you want to participate in our poll for the best tenor saxophone player.
