Sunshine of Your Lover Performed by the Jimi Hendrix Experience Band Live in Stockholm

Sunshine of Your Love performed by an exceptional trio of the psychodelic rock epoche: the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Compare this version to the interpretation The Cream performs of the same song. Here we can observe lots of improvisation. The sound quality is not the best and it is kind of annoying on the bass guitar solo, however, this is a great video document of the time and we think everybody should know it.

The Cream Performing Sunshine of Your Love

In this video you can see and listen to the legendary blues rock band Cream performing a classic tune called Sunshine of Your Love. The Cream was a non typical rock group since it counted with only three musicians instead of the usual four or five. These musicians were Eric Clapton on the lead guitar and vocals, Ginger Baker on the drums and Jack Bruce on the electric bass guitar and vocals.
The same song was interpreted by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, check both versions and decide which one is your favourite.
Some comment on this video on the youtube site says: “Ginger Baker turned the rock world on its head with this amazing display of musicianship. While every other drummer at the time was busy emphasizing the off-beat, Baker drove relentlessly at the first beat and gave a sense of urgency to what, in other hands, would have been quite an average song. Brilliant!” That is an excellent comment which we fully subscribe.

David Bowie Performs Heroes Live on Stage

This video shows the legendary David Bowie live on stage performing Heroes, one of his hits. David Bowie is not only a pop music singer, he has also participated in movies like The Man Who Fell From Heaven, where he represented an allien who had come to earth. His androgyne look is part of his brandmark. He certainly belongs to the pop music ambient and has very little to do with the rock music scene. He also reminds some Velvet Underground and Lou Reed music …

Siouxsie and the Banshees Happy House Video Clip

Siouxsie & the Banshees is a rock band that appeared in 1976 in the United Kingdom ans was formed by lead singer Siouxsie Sioux. In their first appearances in public it seemed that the band belonged to the punk music scene, however, soon it became clear that Souxsie was not willy to limit herself and the group to straight punk rock. They began to experiment with rhythm and sounds, so that the famous London newspager The Times referred to Siouxsie and the Banshees as “one of the most audacious and uncompromising musical adventurers of the post-punk era.”
Later, Siouxsie and the Banshees served as an inspiration for the creators of gothic rock, but also for some pop and avantgarde groups and singers.
Siouxsie and the Banshees disappeared from the music scene in 1995 when Siouxsie felt like the group wasn’t going anywhere anymore. The band broke up and Siouxsie now acts with The Creatures.

The Sun Ra Arkestra Performing Shadow World in a Concert in West Berlin

This video presents one of the most important free jazz groups ever: the Sun Ra Arkestra. They are playin a concert in West Berlin and performing the song Shadow World. It is not clear when this concert was recorded but the black and white pictures suggest it was in the late 1960s when german television still recorded and transmitted in black and white.
Sun Ra was always regarded as an excentric musician and many people have no access to this kind of music, they even say it is no music at all or that all musicians are fake, that they can’t play their instruments. However, this is not true. All musicians in the Sun Ra Arkestra were excellent on their instrument but just had no wish to play in the well known mainstream, repeating standard tunes and performing what everybody could accept. It is a fact that such great jazz musicians as John Coltrane took a couple of saxophone playing lessons from the sax player who appears in this video, John Gilmore might be his name, leave a comment if you know better.
The band was really avantgarde, watch that at the end they even come up with some rap – in the late sixties !

The Kronos Quartet Performing the Jimi Hendrix Tune Foxy Lady

This video features the Kronos Quartet performing a classic Jimi Hendrix song called Foxy Lady. The Kronos Quartet is a musical ensemble of four young musicians who play string instruments. They all have studied a classical concert music instrumentalist career but have joined in this quartet with the goal to perform not only the repertoir of typical concert music string quartets. Instead, they are also performing compositions and arrangements from other musical environments besides the mandatory classical set of compositions.
In this little clip they have chosen a piece by rock star and electric guitar playing pioneer Jimi Hendrix called Foxy Lady. This is not the only piece of Jimi Hendrix interpreted by the Kronos Quartet, they also perform his tune Purple Haze (and maybe some more, so far I’ve found the two mentioned ones on youtube).
Jimi Hendrix was the most important rock guitar player of his time and has contributed strongly to the evolution of the possibilities of the electric guitar sound. He is well known for his appearance on the Woodstock festival where he performed the Star Spangled Banner, the north american national anthem, in his very own style, being a part of the love and peace movement and producing sounds with his guitar that imitated the falling american bombs over Vietnam.

Lou Reed Singing Walk on the Wild Side and Interviewed by Australien Journalists

Watch this video with underground rock star Lou Reed performing his hit Walk on the Wild Side and being interviewed by the australian press. I think everybodey knows the tune since it has been aired by radio stations from all over the world for several decades now. It has a kind of minimalistic melody while in this version the guitar plays a little bit more than just the usual simple chord progression.
The interview is hilarious. Lou Reed limits himself to very short answers like ‘yes’, ‘no’, and ‘I don’t know’ and responding even in a contradictory way. He knows who he is and what he represents …

Holly came from miami f.l.a.
Hitch-hiked her way across the U.S.A.

Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her leg and then he was a she
She says, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
Said, hey honey, take a walk on the wild side

Candy came from out on the island
In the backroom she was everybodys darling

But she never lost her head
Even when she was given head
She says, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
Said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
And the coloured girls go

Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo

Little Joe never once gave it away
Everybody had to pay and pay

A hustle here and a hustle there
New York city is the place where they said
Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
I said hey Joe, take a walk on the wild side

Sugar plum fairy came and hit the streets
Lookin for soul food and a place to eat

Went to the Apollo
You should have seen him go go go
They said, hey sugar, take a walk on the wild side
I said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
All right, huh

Jackie is just speeding away
Thought she was James Dean for a day

Then I guess she had to crash
Valium would have helped that dash
She said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
I said, hey honey, take a walk on the wild side
And the coloured girls say

Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo

Well, Lou Reed obvoiusly does some variations on the lyrics when performing live on stage, but his eventual alterations don’t really change the meaning of the song.
