Siouxsie and the Banshees Happy House Video Clip

Siouxsie & the Banshees is a rock band that appeared in 1976 in the United Kingdom ans was formed by lead singer Siouxsie Sioux. In their first appearances in public it seemed that the band belonged to the punk music scene, however, soon it became clear that Souxsie was not willy to limit herself and the group to straight punk rock. They began to experiment with rhythm and sounds, so that the famous London newspager The Times referred to Siouxsie and the Banshees as “one of the most audacious and uncompromising musical adventurers of the post-punk era.”
Later, Siouxsie and the Banshees served as an inspiration for the creators of gothic rock, but also for some pop and avantgarde groups and singers.
Siouxsie and the Banshees disappeared from the music scene in 1995 when Siouxsie felt like the group wasn’t going anywhere anymore. The band broke up and Siouxsie now acts with The Creatures.

The Kronos Quartet Performing the Jimi Hendrix Tune Foxy Lady

This video features the Kronos Quartet performing a classic Jimi Hendrix song called Foxy Lady. The Kronos Quartet is a musical ensemble of four young musicians who play string instruments. They all have studied a classical concert music instrumentalist career but have joined in this quartet with the goal to perform not only the repertoir of typical concert music string quartets. Instead, they are also performing compositions and arrangements from other musical environments besides the mandatory classical set of compositions.
In this little clip they have chosen a piece by rock star and electric guitar playing pioneer Jimi Hendrix called Foxy Lady. This is not the only piece of Jimi Hendrix interpreted by the Kronos Quartet, they also perform his tune Purple Haze (and maybe some more, so far I’ve found the two mentioned ones on youtube).
Jimi Hendrix was the most important rock guitar player of his time and has contributed strongly to the evolution of the possibilities of the electric guitar sound. He is well known for his appearance on the Woodstock festival where he performed the Star Spangled Banner, the north american national anthem, in his very own style, being a part of the love and peace movement and producing sounds with his guitar that imitated the falling american bombs over Vietnam.

Gamma Ray Performed by German Rock Band Birth Control

Watch this video with german rock band Birth Control performing the tune Gamma Ray, one of their most successfull songs. This is a concert from the 1970s and belongs to what people outside of Germany called Krautrock, referring to Kraut which is typical german food.
The band played in the progressive rock tradition and in this video clip is performing a concert for the german television channel WDR which organized yearly rock concerts for live transmission throughout the late seventies and early eighties. This version of the song shows only the first part of the song, usually there would begin a drum solo when this clip ends …

Pink Floyd’s Song Wish You Were Here Guitar Lesson

Watch this video clip featuring the first part of four that help guitar players to learn this song on the guitar. The lesson will show you how to play everything, solo guitar and chords. The teacher is very pacient with his students and explains all details.
He shows us how to move the fingers of the left hand over the frets of the neck. It is of great help because it also shows the right strokes for the right hand. Of course, right hand and left hand roles depend on the individual player, most of the people play this way, but it might be the other way around.
Pink Floyd released this song on their album with the same title. This album became very popular and the song is one of the best known Pink Floyd songs among the younger people.
You will find the other three parts of the song on youtube.

Deep Purple Performing Their All Times Hit Smoke on the Water

This video clip shows the heavy metal and hard rock band Deep Purple performing their greatest hit called Smoke on the Water. This peace of music has become a must play for all hard rock music guitar players.
Deep Purple appeared on the music scene in the 1970s and has remained there for a long time.
This video clip is from a concert in 1999 while the original version was released earlier and the concert recorded in this video clip took place in 1973. We strongly recommend you to look for the original version, specially because of the former singer of the group.
Notice that the lyrics talk about a fire that happened in Montreux where the band played a concert in a music festival, the lyrics also mention another great rock musician: Frank Zappa who also played this festival.
The initial riff is well known all over the world and since it is very easy to play, every beginning rock guitar player learns it. Not so the rest of the song which includes a solo that requires some advanced skills.

Black Sabbath Performing their Superhit Paranoid

This video shows the famous british hard rock and heavy metal band Black Sabbath performing their greatest hit called Paranoid. This band appeared on the music scene in 1968 under the name of Polka Tulk Blues Band, and rapidly became very popular, landing several hits in the top ten charts of the time. The band’s original line up counted with Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler , Tony Iommi and Bill Ward. Black Sabbath has been an influence to bands like Pantera, Megadeth, Motorhead, Judas Priest, Soundgarden, Slayer or Metallica have continued the dark style of Black Sabbath.
The band forced Ozzy Osbourne to leave in 1979 due to problems related to drug addiction. Black Sabbath however did continue to play concerts with different musicians as group members, until the year of 1997 when the band had its comeback with the original members. This group played from 1997 to 2006.
An interesting detail is that the guitar player of the group suffered an accident while working in a factory. This incident cost him two fingers but he used some plastic from old bottles as prothesis. In order to play the guitar he had to lower the tension of the strings, changing the standard tuning to one that allowed him to continue with his musical career. Since the bass player of the group adopted the same tuning, the specific dark sound of Black Sabbath was born.

Reggae-Poet Linton Kwesi Johnson Performing Sonnies Lettah

Watch this video with Linton Kwesi Johnson who was born in 1952 in Chapelton, Jamaica, but left at age 11 moving to London were he attended school, concluding his studies as a sociologist at the University of London. He can be regarded as the first reggae-poet. During his life as a student he joined the british Black Panther movement and the group of musicians and poets called Rasta Love. In 1974 at age 22 Linton Kwesi Johnson’s first selection of poems was published in the Race Today magazine, followed by a second selection one year later. Another three years later his first record titled Dread Beat An’ Blood appeared on the label Virgin Recors, followed by an intense artistic activity, producing four other records until 1981: Making History, LKJ in Dub, Bass Culture and Forces of Victory.
From then on Linton Kwesi Johnson published his work on his own label, LKJ, and was envolved in many creative activities, including tours with the Dennis Bovell Dub Band, collaborations with the jazz trumpet player Shake Keane and the writer Jean Binta Breeze as well as his participation as a reporter and other media productions.
The records of Linton Kwesi Johnson have sold and sell very well and he has been translated into other languages, including german and italian. It seems important to me that this icon of the alternative british culture consideres himself as a poet in the first place and that he doesn’t pretend to be a singer in the conventional meaning of the term. Since music is much more acceptable between people and specially among young folks, he consequently uses music as a medium for better divulgation of his poetry which is written out in the jamaican Patois dialect and addresses political issues like the experiences of inmigrants in the UK, the british foreign policies, respectable persons like Blair Peach.
In the last years, Linton Kwesi Johnson has performed only in a few occasions which could have to do with the fact that nowadays, reggae has evolved and is dominated now by tendencies like dancehall or raggamuffin.

Frank Zappa performing Stairway to Heaven in a Cover Version of this Original Led Zeppelin Song

This video shows one of the rare ocasions with Frank Zappa performing a cover version of a song composed by other artists, in this case by the famous rock band Led Zeppelin. The cover is pretty close to the original music, which means the song is fully recognizable by anyone, however it has Frank Zappa’s personal stamp on it. The band of Frank Zappa in this ocasion is composed of about ten musicians while the Led Zeppelin band counted with only four musicians. The main difference is that Frank Zappa’s band has a brass section which fits perfectly into the song. The arrangement was of course done by the bandleader and includes some extra guitar notes in the quiet introduction of the piece as well as some other notes and noises produced by the members of the group. It sounds funny and I think the performance of this song illustrated that humour does belong in music. If you like to watch more videos with music performed by Frank Zappa, you can click his name in our tag cloud or you might want to visit the fiesta-musical.com website where you can find more videos with music performed by Frank Zappa, interviews with him and some domcumentary video material related to this important (rock) musician of the 20th century. Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven

Led Zeppelin is one of the most important rock music groups of all times. The video clip shows them playing one of their most famous songs ‘Stairway to Heaven’. This recording is taken from the movie ‘The Song Remains the Same’ and illustrates Jimi Page’s ability to play the guitar, Robert Plant’s singing in the high range of his voice and John Bonham’s powerfull drumming.
On youtube there is a discussion ongoing about if this music has any value since it means to be a cheap copy of the original blues music, played by black musicians. This is a waste of time. Development and evolution do start at some point, that’s right. But first, we think that anything that is good for mankind belongs to all mankind, not to a few patent holders or original authors. In musical terms, almost all music played on guitar uses similar material, however, there are differences between a sonata from Johan Sebastian Bach and a jazz musician’s improvisition or elaboration on this sonata. If you understand western concert music as the evolution of dissonancies becoming accepted one by one as consonancies you will see that almost every musician has an education which shows him the ancestor’s music and how it can be developed. As a matter of fact, art is exactly the right balance of ald, approved and accepted stuff together with new elements.
Back to led Zeppelin, this video has a fair sound quality and we know that you rock music fans will enjoy it. After all, music is more than words. For those of you who would like to sing along with this song or make your own version of it, we offer the lyrics:

There’s a lady who’s sure all that glitters is gold
And she’s buying a stairway to heaven
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for
Ooh, ooh, and she’s buying a stairway to heaven

There’s a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
‘Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings
In a tree by the brook, there’s a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it makes me wonder

There’s a feeling I get when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking
and it makes me wonder
really makes me wonder

And it’s whispered that soon if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forest will echo with laughter

***

If there’s a bustle in your hedgerow, don’t be alarmed now,
It’s just a spring clean for the May Queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There’s still time to change the road you’re on
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, Ooh, it makes me wonder

Your head is humming and it won’t go, in case you don’t know
The piper’s calling you to join him
Dear lady, can’t you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind

***

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all is one and one is all, yeah
To be a rock and not to roll.

And she’s buying the stairway to heaven
